Our little mushroom had her first Tae Kwon Do tournament today at the community center. We started our day early since she had to be at the venue by 8:30am. If you ask me, it’s pretty early to wake up at this time, on a Saturday morning. But we got to do, what we had to.
Everything was fine, until I remembered that, she left her sparring gear at the martial art school. Without it, she would not be allowed to spar. So, my husband drove us first to the school to get the gear, and to my dismay, nobody was there. The school was closed. I panicked, and was stressed out. It was kind of my fault though. I forgot to remind her (and my husband) to bring the gear the night before to our home, so we could just bring it at the tournament the next day. Here’s what my laid-back spirit said – “It’s fine. We will just drop by at the school tomorrow before we will head to the tournament venue.”
The tournament started as scheduled at 9:00am. I told that school owner’s that, Amber’s sparring gear’s inside the school, and we could not get it. The very nice owner then asked one of the school drivers to get it for us. At this moment, I started to feel better. The nervousness subsided. Fortunately, her division would start an hour later, so it bought us time.
If I had to relay all that had transpired the whole day, it would be too long. So let me just end it by saying – Congrats,
to our little mushroom! A silver medal for traditional form and a bronze medal for the point sparring under 7/8 beginners division!
P.S.
The whole experience taught me a lesson of becoming a better parent. I just realized that, this whole sport thing is not a joke. To those kids, it is a way to excel as individual.
As for Amber – what started as a past time is now becoming a passion. A passion that, she is committed to pursue , aside from her studies. She has to be a well-rounded individual to be a better one.
As for me – I am on it now! If I have to be a stage mother, then so be it!
