Today marks the 20th day since I deleted red meat, coffee and any sugar-sweetened drinks in my diet. The first ten days were spent inducing nothing but only fresh fruits and vegetables in a juice form. During the first two days, I thought that I would faint from starvation. But I realized, it was not starvation. It was just a “craving” to eat food that I like, even if I really I did not need it. Twenty days ago was the start of my quest to a healthy lifestyle. There is one thing that I need to revamp though, my exercising habit. I admit – I am pretty bad in sticking to my schedule. The other week, I had a complimentary one-hour session with a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym. At 45 bucks an hour, it is expensive. So I am not going to continue it. Besides, the exercises are the same as those that I have seen in Youtube. It is just a matter of having the willpower to do it without supervision.

To get optimal health, I turn into the natural way. I eat fruits and vegetables more than ever before. It does not have to be all organic products. I get it – getting rid of some basic food in my diet can mean missing some nutrients. In order to get a balance diet, I take vitamins and supplements daily. Even then, I am always looking for new food supplements in the market. I have tried acai berry for a while, but it is too expensive to maintain. Just a while ago, I read about Nopalea, a tasty wellness drink created from the fruit of the Nopal cactus. For years, people have been using it in minimizing body pains and inflammation. Aside from promoting good cellular health, it also aids in cleansing the body from toxins. They offer a free trial, paying only the shipping cost of $9.99, by calling 1-800-203-7063. Surely, this product is worth a try.

Whenever I get my water bill in the mail, I cringe seeing the amount. It is roughly 40 bucks more than the bill in our old address. The thing is – I do not see any major changes in our water usage at all. I checked the installed shower heads, it is not the eco-friendly type. It is probably the reason of the big difference in the bill. So this morning, the Knight and I went to Lowe’s to grab two brass-finished water-saving shower heads by Delta. I like the idea that, it has five spray settings – drenching full spray, standard full spray, massage spray, full spray with massage and trickl. I can control the water usage, at least, when taking a shower. Hopefully, this change will save us some bucks.

I can spend hours in the home or kitchen section of a department store without any complains. As I probably mentioned in one of my previous posts, I am still in the process of beautifying our home, which obviously takes forever. I am gearing towards having a modern minimalist eclectic theme, as a point of reference. As of right now, I am seeking for unique, modern, reasonably-priced and, most of all, functional knick knacks.

One area in our home that needs some TLC is our kitchen. Though the cabinets are huge, the pots and pans are taking so much of its space. These cookware vary in sizes. One solution that, I am checking into right now is pot racks. I prefer Enclume pot racks over anything else. Most of their products are hand-wrought by skilled craftsmen, giving it a superb quality, a maintenance-free and long-life finishes. There are many styles to choose from – hanging, wall-mounted and free-standing pot racks. So far from what I have seen in their website, I am pleased.

Here is the second story contributed by a guest writer, my 10-y.o little mushroom. It is a brilliant concoction of her imaginative and witty mind. You will find incorrect grammar and spelling, as this story is copied ”as is” from her file. Please bear with her. Her writing skills is still a work in progress.

******************************************************************************

THE JOURNEY

Day 1

Once upon a time, a girl named Violet Rossy lived in a small town called Metropolis. Metropolis was known for its scrumptious food. It had many restaurants and cuisines. Violet worked at a place called the Le Bakery , the best bakery in the city. She was the baker’s assistant for 5 years and wondered if she can finally master the baking skills of Chef Renee Valette, Violet’s boss. Chef Renee was a pleasant lady who was nice enough to give every single child a sugary treat to make their day! Violet asked Chef Renee if she can have the recipe for her world famous caramel apples. Chef Renee was delighted to hear that Violet was taking an interest of the fine arts of baking, so she handed Violet an old sheet of paper. Chef Renee said it was passed down in her family for many generations so it might be dusty. The recipe for the world famous Valette caramel apples needed Fuji apples from Fiji, Caramel sauce from France, and the finest almonds in the city.

Day 2

Violet packed three airplane tickets to Fiji, France, and back to Metropolis, her wallet containing $250.00, a blanket, a pillow for sleeping and six sets of clothes. She exited the bakery and started to head towards The Nut-ty Store. She walked and she spotted a penny, the head was up so it meant it was going to be a lucky week. She continued strolling to The Nut-ty Store and finally arrived at the store. In the store was a variety of nuts. It had peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, hazelnut, coconuts, chestnuts, Betel nuts, pistachios, kola nuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, pine nuts, macadamios, filberts, bread nuts, candle nuts, acorns, beeches, kurrajongs, red bopple nuts, pili nuts, canarium nuts, Gabon nuts, hickory nuts, bush mangos, ogbonos, jack nuts, pekea nuts, butternuts, heart nuts, and many more! That is a lot of nuts! Violet talked to the owner if she can get the best almonds in the store for the world famous Valette caramel apples and the owner said she can get as much as she liked only if she gives them a caramel apple. Violet and the owner said “deal” and shook hands to make it a promise. Tomorrow is the day we go to the airport.

Day 3

Time for the airport! Violet almost missed the plane to Fiji. While Violet was flying to Fiji, it was an undisturbed peace, order, and quiet. When they arrived at Fij,i they found a lost truffle pig. Violet saw the truffle pig because truffle pigs are not found in Fiji and the truffle pig might have been shipped to the wrong place. Truffle pigs are supposed to be in France, it is a good thing Violet is going to France. So she strudded with the pig and went to the apple farm. When she got there she picked out 50 Fuji apples and inspected every one. Each apple was perfect. After she went apple picking she went to the souvenir shoppe and got Chef Renee a vivid snow globe to thank her a lot for letting her get the caramel apple recipe. Violet was fatigued and slept in a hotel so she can get a lot of rest for France tomorrow.

Day 4

The flight to France was breath taking! Violet saw the ocean gleaming when the sun rose up for the beginning of a new, beautiful, day. Then the flight was over. When Violet exited the air port, she immediately went to the world famous Le Valette Sauce Shoppe. Inside there was Chef Renee’s cousin Ace Valette. Violet asked Ace if she can buy caramel sauce so she can make the famous Valette caramel apples in French. Just like the Nut-ty store manager Ace agreed if he can get a caramel apple. Violet happily said yes. Just like she did in Fiji she bought a souvenir for the owner of the Nut-ty store to show she appreciated the almonds. Violet was exited! Tomorrow she would be preparing the caramel apples. But right now Violet was preparing her stuff so she can be ready when she arrives at Metropolis.

Day 5

Violet was beat! Traveling to Fiji and France is a lot of work when you really think about it. The airplane was just landing. After the airplane landed and everyone was out of the air port, Violet ran quickly to the Le Bakery. She saw Chef Renee and hugged her. Violet was glad she saw Chef Renee again. After she hugged her , Violet gave Chef Renee the snowglobe Violet got her from Fuji. Violet and Chef Renee worked together as a team to finish the caramel apples. Finally she rested up so she would be peppy to hand out the apples.

Day 6 (FINALLY!!)

As soon as Violet woke up she went up to the gift store and got Ace a present for the caramel sauce. She shipped one caramel apple and the gift to France where Ace lives. Violet hopes that Ace will be delighted. Next she gave a caramel apple to the owner of the Nut-ty store and also gave him that gift she got him in France. He was elated! The rest of the apples went to friends, kids, neighbors, and everyone else in Metropolis. Everyone was happy that a kind girl gave them a treat. Everyone was happy for a long time in Metropolis for a long time. THE SWEET END!!=)

For the past couple of days, my little mushroom had a minor case of cough and colds. I had to go out late at night to buy the medicine that she needed. Fortunately, there are a lot of over the counter drugs that really work. I went home with two bottles of bubble gum flavored cough and colds syrup. In a day time, she recuperated. The next step now is to get the flu shot in the next two months.

I am really grateful that, there is a 24/7 pharmacy within 10 miles from home. Whenever somebody in our household is sick, I can always go out and buy the medicine even late at night. My sympathy goes people, especially senior citizens, in places wherein the convenience of a local pharmacy is not known.

In Canada, there is an online company that caters to the need of buying Canada drugs online. Its goal is to provide quality and reasonably priced generic and branded medicines. The website is legit. In fact, it is accredited by the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA). People who buy lipitor or other prescription drugs need not worry. With the company’s live support 7 days a week, buying online proves to be easy and convenient.

Due to unresolved issues and different viewpoints, the contract between two important players in the healthcare industry – Walgreens and Express Scripts – was not renewed effective January 1, 2012. Express Scripts removed Walgreens from its network of retail pharmacies.

Our household is deeply saddened by this news. We are one of the millions of people benefiting from Walgreens being affiliated with Express Scripts. Though we buy prescription medication only once or twice a year, this abrupt change will surely affect the convenience of getting it. Walgreens is the most accessible and the nearest pharmacy from our home. In fact, we only not buy medicines from them, but as well as some grocery products. With their 24/7 and drive-thru service, the company stays true to its mission – a pharmacy and a convenience store rolled into one place. As for Express Scripts, it was not our choice. Our health insurance has partnered with them. It is the same thing as saying – we have no choice, but to suck it up.

We are glad that Walgreens is doing something to continue its good services to its clients. The company has started a program called Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. For $10.00 a year, our household can avail of the discounted price on both branded and generic medications.

If you want to support Walgreens stand on this issue, you can follow Walgreens on Twitter and like Walgreens on Facebook.

For quite some time, I stopped viewing Filipino TV shows over the Internet. A number of shows are mimicking popular western reality TV shows. I do not need that. It is already at a point of saturation. Even then, people still patronize these shows.

Whenever I crave for a different kind of entertainment, I usually surf Youtube for interesting videos. I found this amazing rendition of a mash-up song of two famous songs, Wind Beneath My Wings and If I Could. It was sung by two Filipinos, Aiza Seguerra and Krizza Neri as their piece in the nationwide talent search called Protégé. I was blown away by the song, and the singers too. I always play it over and over again, even while doing my mat exercise.

Here is the video, enjoy!
