That is right. Tomorrow is the start of the “usual”. There are no more long holiday weekends, and classes will start as usual. This also means, the little mushroom will be back to her regular martial arts classes. She will be back to being the active and athletic kid that she is. The only thing that I am not so fond about it is – she has to bring her gym bag to school every day. It is pretty heavy, if you ask me. Good thing – she has the strength to carry it until the afternoon to her martial arts class. The place does not have steel lockers. They do have a locker, but it is open. It is just basically steel racks where the kids can store their (other) gym bags, which contain the sparring gears. As for the daily gym bag that she carries, she just put it anywhere there’s a space. It is not the usual gym set-up, but so far, parents are fine with it. Since it is a privately owned establishment, I do not really have much of a choice. It is a matter of – take it or leave it, and I choose to “take it”.

Anyway, I am hoping that the new year will bring more blessings to my family and to everyone. I pray and hope that, 2012 is a great year for us just like 2011.

  • New Year, New Financial Outlook

It is another long holiday weekend! Two more sleeps and we will be welcoming the year 2012. I envy those people who will spend it with their whole family and relatives. In my case, it is just my family and no relatives at all. Dinner will be simple as usual. Anyway, it will still be great. I am with the Knight and the little mushroom.

Aside from the celebration, I am also researching about the upcoming tax season. I need to know what’s new and what’s not for tax year 2011. With the assistance of a tax software, I usually prepare my tax returns. Thanks to my unsatisfactory experience with H&R Block a few years ago, it gave me the push to do it myself.

It is also the time to re-evaluate my finances, eliminating what is unnecessary. The first in the list  are credit cards with annual fees and high APRs. I am grateful for websites that give credit card ratings. Comparing the pros-and-cons of each card will be easier and quicker. I am lucky though, because I have not fallen into the temptation of maxing out my cards. Besides, the very reason I got them is because of the goal to create a credit history. Now that I have accomplished that, it is time to cut-off what needs to be cut-off.

Our internet went out for several hours last week, so my husband decided that we were going to switch internet providers. He found one he liked by searching “wireless internet Daytona Beach”. I am so glad he did because I found the cutest project online for our kids to do. I have wanted to make some sort of ornament for them to put their handprint on and I finally found one I liked on Pineterest. It uses flour, salt, and water to make dough in which the kids can put their handprints in and bake in the oven to harden it. I tried it yesterday and I am really happy with how they turned out. My two-year-old son made one of his handprint and I made another one using my six-month-old daughter’s foot. I put their initials and the year on them and I think I will paint them sometime this week to make them more festive. If they turn out really good I will probably make more for my parents and my husband’s parents. I wish I had done this when my son had his first Christmas, but I was in survival mode then and was not nearly as crafty.

    …that counts.

For the first time, I gave holiday well-wishing greeting cards to my colleagues. It is very unlikely of me to do this. Every holiday season, I am always unprepared. But you know what, even if it is just a card, they were grateful for it. That’s what I like about people here – even the smallest gesture of thoughtfulness is acknowledged. Most importantly, thoughtfulness is never counted in dollars.

December is the most expensive month of the year. It is also the most-liked month. In the Philippines, this is the time employees get their 13th month pay, which is mandated by law, and if they get lucky – a month pay as Christmas bonus.

To others, the holiday season means spending tons of money on gifts. There is no such thing as a loved one, it is loved “ones”. Yes, you buy for the whole gang. On top that, it is a must to give something to the godchildren.

To my godchildren (and relatives), sorry if I have not been there to shower you with gifts. Someday, I make it up to you. Just because I live in the US, it does not mean that I am rich. Thank you for understanding.

  • One Step Closer To A Scholarship

Being a mother to a knowledge-hungry child, I always find ways to challenge my daughter’s intellect. This is to make sure that, she is not bored. Actually, it is just recently that I realized this after reading a website regarding academically exceptional children. This is one of the expert’s suggestions that I take seriously. It is also very timely that, the little mushroom got an invitation to the The Belin-Blank Exceptional Talent Search (BESTS), established by the University of Iowa in consortium with Stetson University in Florida. Invitation is extended to students in the gifted program or have scored on or above 95th percentile on any subject area on the FCAT and other standardized tests. Indeed, I am one proud mother. Below is the front of the invitation:

I have to admit – I am very particular with the educational progress of my little mushroom. With the cost of college education in the US, who would not be? Right now, I am not in a situation wherein I can pay for a pre-paid college plan. It is pretty expensive, if you ask me. Fortunately, the little mushroom is smart. So joining programs like BESTS (or HATS of Stetson University) is one step closer to an academic scholarship. Also, there are websites out there that specialized in finding the right scholarships and student grants for certain groups, even for left handed students. I am really surprised of the many grants that there is in this country. It is just a matter of seeking for it, and qualifies for it too (of course). Worst comes to worst – I can always look for financial aid information should the need arise.

  • “How Social Media Fuels Social Unrest”

    Wired Magazine, January 2012 Issue

I finally got my Wired Magazine January 2012 issue in the mail today. The first thing that I noticed, the front page texts say – “How Social Media Fuels Social Unrest”. I could not believe my eyes. This topic is very timely and will surely create a huge impact on people in my hometown in the Philippines, if  they read it.

If I may reiterate my previous posts, my hometown was hit by a tragic calamity a few days ago. A deadly typhoon, Sendong, brought sorrow to the whole nation. As of yesterday, the death toll reached 652 and more than 800 still missing. Tell me, what could be more tragic than celebrating Christmas with a death in the family?

In a tightly-knit country, bound by the spirit of bayanihan(camaraderie), negativity is not welcome in time of distress.  When most of the people are sympathetic, two daring Filipinos chose the other side of the fence. They posted very disturbing comments concerning the Typhoon Sendong victims in their less-private Facebook Wall.  They cussed and wished ill to the residents of the affected area. The culprits – Van Carumba, a Filipina currently working in Dubai, and Celine Acut, a Filipino living in France. You would think that this is nothing. Such harsh remark is just a product of an idle mind. True. But guess what, it shook the whole nation. Thanks to the site’s  Share and Tag capability, a virtual riot was launched. A number of blog posts were written, hurtful words were said, and some fictitious Facebook fan page was created. In fact, a law suit is even mentioned. Such chaos, such a disgrace.

Here is my take on this –

Whatever these two Filipinos wrote in their Facebook Wall is none of my concern. First – I do not know them. Second – it is their Wall, it is their space. Third – There is so much going on in my life and I got no time to spare lambasting them. And lastly, it is their point-of-view, and let it stay that way. As for those who reacted not to well, move on. This is the first-and-last post that I will have regarding this issue. Sayonara.

Keep the love and care coming, guys. They need our help in rehabilitating Cagayan de Oro City, and in starting a new life for those who are unfortunate. Below is the updated tally of Xavier University’s Operation : Tabang Sendong project.

By the way, they accept donations via PayPal. I am really happy about this. Bank-to-bank transaction takes three business days. Even a donation of 5 bucks can make a difference. Here is the link to Typhoon Sendong Relief for more detials.

Mother Earth’s wrath spread to Northern Mindanao these past few days through a tropical storm named Typhoon Sendong. This is the worst flood that hit Cagayan de Oro City since I can remember. It displaced thousands of families. Communities living on the banks of the Cagayan de Oro River were greatly affected. Houses were swept to sea. As of this moment, 347 persons succumb to death. Such adversity hits our town during a jovial season. It is sad, but it one of those realities that we have to face head on – together as a community.

I am glad that, my family and relatives are fine. Fortunately, they prepared for it the moment they learned about the typhoon.

Most of the houses in our block are already ready for the holidays after Thanksgiving Day. Holiday decors are visible. Some houses go beyond the usual and showcase truly amazing decors. But some houses do not have it yet until today, including ours. If you are wondering on how I feel – well, it does not bother me. Hopefully, I will be prepared next year. Right now, I am more interested in beautifying the façade of our house using basic decors for all seasons. I am eyeing for really cool-looking customized address plaques. I found one that I really like (as seen in the image). The design is simple and elegant. Also, the gold texts go well with the black background. This plaque is a good match for the color of our house too.

  • Are You Looking for Asus Eee Pad Tablet Accessories?

For quite some time now, we have been tirelessly searching for a protective case and a screen cover for the Knight’s Asus Eee Pad tablet. We thought that, we could find it at Best Buy where we got the gadget. We were dead wrong and very disappointed. The search did not end there. We went to other electronic shops in Daytona Beach to try our luck, but to no avail. Most of the stores carry accessories for iPad (of course) and the Samsung Galaxy tablets. Finding accessories designed for Asus Eee Pad proved to be quite challenging.

Today, we went to OfficeDepot to buy a software that I want for so long. Lo and behold, we saw what we have been looking for without even really looking for it (you know that feeling for sure). Who would think that, this store carries Asus Eee Pad accessories? It was a surprise and a relief. I do not have to buy it online, which can be more money due to shipping costs. For 39 bucks, we got a protective case. Yehey!

By the way, the Knight is really satisfied with his Asus Eee Pad TF101 32GB. It has all the applications and the technical specifications that he wants in a tablet. For about $450.00 (about 150 bucks lesser than an iPad2), it is a indeed good buy for the same features (or more).

  • Securing Our Future through Credit Repair

    Dec 13th 2011

With the volatile and ever-changing economic environment nowadays, we can never be sure if our future is in good hands or not. We may be gainfully employed right now, but in a blink of an eye, we could be adding ourselves to the increasing number of unemployed. Such event is life-changing. If we have not saved for the rainy days, eventually bills continually to pile up. When we can no longer keep up, we may end up losing everything we have worked for. It may cause a dreaded financial destitution, and even up to bankruptcy. The worst outcome is negatively affecting our credit score. As we all know, credit scoring in the US means a lot. In fact, everything revolves around credit. When we are in dire need to straighten our credit, a credit repair comes in. This is a way to secure our future. But if doing it ourselves seems to be an impossibility, we can hire others to do it at a reasonable costs. To get the best credit repair service, we need to lean toward companies that have been doing it for a long time. Reliability is the utmost criteria that we have to consider.

So do not lose hope when everything falls apart. There are still ways to get up and rebuild our future through credit repair.

  • Where Would I Be Without the Internet?

    Dec 11th 2011

For some reason, I am a tad bit sentimental today. It is Sunday, and here I am in my little writing nook. The day seems to drag slowly. Am I complaining? Yes and no. Obviously, “drag slowly” equates to “boring”. But on a brighter note, I am glad that I have Internet services at home to help me live a little. Where would I be without the Internet? Let me think…I would be definitely in the library or the bookstore, salivating with all the books my eyes can see. I am not much of a park or a mall person. Besides, the Volusia Mall in Daytona Beach is not really a must place to visit. Sad to say, I have to go all the way to Orlando or St. Augustine whenever I desire to (window) shop.

Last night, the City of Ormond Beach had its annual holiday parade. Though the little mushroom was a participant of the said parade, I did not watch it. I am still mad at myself. I should have gone. Gladly, there are some people who witnessed it posted some pictures. I get to experience what it was like to be there. By the way, kudos to the city government of Ormond Beach. It was another successful event.

Though I like staying at home, I still find ways to know what’s going on around my neighborhood and the country in general. In my four years of living here in the US, I know things that some citizens do not bother know. I am a big fan of the bureaucratic processes of the government, especially tax and immigration legislations. I also dig OpenCourseWare to feed my hunger for knowledge. Whether a dial up or a dsl connection, the Internet makes it a whole lot of difference.

  • What’s Brewing In Our Kitchen?

The Knight consumes about a gallon of Arizona green tea every two days. It is his “water”. For $2.99 a gallon, it is getting expensive. One day, I decided to do something about it. I went to the grocery shop, and got a box of tea bags. Since then, I brewed our own iced tea. A 100-piece box is only about six bucks, which lasts for months. It gets even better whenever the brands that I like are on sale. To enhance the taste, I put fresh lemon juice in it. It tastes just like the store-bought iced tea. The Knight loves it!

One thing about getting older is the gradual change of our taste in style and clothing. We go for what is comfortable and appropriate. It is no longer about fad, and designer labels. This includes the choice of undergarments. Though hidden from the eyes of others, it speaks loudly of our personality. A good undergarment exudes confidence, and decency.

Personally, I like seamless shape wear. Aside from comfort, it hugs the body tightly minimizing the unsightly love handles. With a bra and cami cleavage cover, it is one less undergarment when wearing an overcoat or an office blazer. Most importantly, it does look modest and professional. It is perfect for the office get-up or even for casual events.

Dressing Up Modestly In A Breeze

  • Candytropic

    Dec 4th 2011

    By: The Little Mushroom

As promised, here is my new guest writer’s first entry.

A little while back in Candytropic a candyan named Crystal Jewel found the mystical place in the heart of their planet, The secret of the candycave. It was sizzling summertime, the jolliest season of the century. All the kids and adults love it because it is the only time when they just can “chillax” ( chill and relax mixed together). When all the other candyans played and laughed, Crystal Jewel was sitting in the steps of her candy cane school and then, suddenly the wind brought her a ragged scroll. She opened it and found out it was a map to the wonderful secret of the candycave. When she was about to scroll it back up when there was a hologram of the first candyan of Candytropic and it told her that after the sun sets the scroll will disappear forever. She quickly told her friend about it, packed up, and they both headed up to Licorice Mountain to begin their journey.

Licorice Mountain was fierce. When Crystal and her best pal , Lolly Pops, were half way the mountain they ran into trouble,ENORMOUS trouble. They had to cross the icy river but, this river isn’t a ordinary river it is a wide, slippery, thin, icy river. Underneath it is a river full of Northern Candyan Eating Piranhas. It was a good thing that they both packed their lightweight ice skates. They both quickly put on their skates because it was getting cold and they started to skate. When they were ten yards from the end the ice started to shake and immediately started to crack. Both Lolly and Crystal would skate for their lives if they didn’t want to be huge popsicles for the piranhas. They barely made it through and it was already noontime. The scroll faded halfway but good thing it only faded the all of the Licorice Mountain part. Only the food maze is left and finally the secret of the candycave!

The food maze is trickier than you think, knowing that it is made out of veggies. Lolly and Crystal were officially lost in the heart of this crazy maze. They guessed which way to go. Then they meet a helpful wizard, Sweet Tarts, which helped them by giving them a map to the end of the food maze and a old poem. They didn’t know what the poem was for so they asked Sweet Tarts and he said, “You will know what to when the time is right.” They worriedly checked the scroll and two thirds of it was faded. It was only one hour until the sun sets. Again they were off!

They got to the entrance but it was shut, magically shut. Next to it was a old honeycomb connected to a long, skinny branch which is stuck in a small sized boulder. It looked like a microphone. Crystal has an idea! Maybe they had to say the old poem. So they tried it and the poem was:Candytropic is a huge blast! All works well, let us make it last! Never let it melt and rot! Don’t think it is store bought! Yell when you have fun, try the hot dog in the bun! C.A.N.D.Y.! Suddenly the entrance opened and the candycave map disappeared. The cave had an endless supply of golden chocolate coins, lollipops, sugary rock crystals on a stick, sweet tarts, candy canes, gumdrops, licorice, butterscotch candies, and any other kinds of sugary sweet treats. Once they made this huge discovery they became famous and rich even Sweet Tarts the wizard but, they all remember the special day it happened. In the future the candyans turned the cave into a factory that helped balance the nature of their super sweet planet!
